I have been requested by General Macpherson to ask you to be good enough to return to me through Lt. Colonel Clarke the papers which I lent him, and I should be much obliged if you would cause this to be done.

The General wrote to me through Lt. Clarke to say that if I had been attached to his column he would have been glad to have had me with him, and I said, in a private letter to you, that I should be glad to have been so attached if the offer had been made to me.
